My name is Ms. Brogan and I am fortunate enough to teach fabulous fourth graders at Belview Elementary School. This is a blog that I created in hopes of keeping loved ones in the loop with what we're learning and how much fun we're having!

Our Class Bulletin Board :)

Hello Friends!
In science we have been learning about plants and the special things they do to survive. We learned about the basic structures of the plant, which are the leaves, stem, flower, and roots. We also got to dissect flowers and see the reproductive parts of the plant up close, which are the stamen, pistil, ovary, and sepals. Last, but not least, we learned about the way plants make their own food. This is a process called photosynthesis and the students completed a three-week long experiment by growing their own plants to test some theories we had about sunlight and its effect on growth. The students did an amazing job with each and every activity we completed but they worked very hard on something special that I am excited to show you.
Our project over our three-week long plant unit was to create a class bulletin board together! Each student had a very special part to make and put on the board after we learned about it. After the three weeks, the entire bulletin board had been covered and extra things had been added. We talked about the relationship between all of the things we learned and why it was important to see everything in a big picture. Below are some photos of what is displayed in our classroom!

Our beautiful sun with our class represented!

As you can see, we have some very talented fourth graders! They did such an amazing job with this project and it really shows what we know as a whole. This helped us build something as a team and recognize that each person has a part to play and something to contribute. They went above and beyond with their teamwork and collaboration. I hope you enjoyed taking a look inside our science adventures!

They're Poets and Know It!

Hello Friends!
In writing we're working with different kinds of poetry for the next two weeks. Our first challenge was to write a haiku. This is a special type of poem that has a structured pattern of three lines: the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables, and the third line with five syllables. The students did an amazing job with writing and they kept asking to write and publish more! As our big haiku project, I had all the students do an art creation as their inspiration for writing. They blew paint trees and did water color paintings as the subject of their final haiku poems.

Our Wall of Wonderful

Hello Friends!
Throughout my time spent in schools I've found that the older students get, the less you see their work displayed on the walls of their school. I have decided to change that this year with our fabulous fourth graders. They have been working very hard in all of our content areas and I hang up everything they do on the walls outside our classroom. The students love seeing their work displayed and it really gives us a sense of pride in what we do. Take a peek at our expanding wall below!

Math Reflection Challenge!

Hello Friends!
In math we are learning about reflections and figures that are congruent. This means shapes that are the same size and same shape. I decided to see if the kids could challenge each other using our pattern blocks and they definitely blew me away with their interesting creations! They were asked to create a pattern with their blocks on one side of the paper and then find someone to reflect their image on the opposite side. Take a look at how much fun these fourth graders had with their imaginations and some determination!

Alayna tried tricking me with this complicated reflection

Ben's reflection challenge went off the page!

As you can see from the wild and crazy pictures, the fourth grade had a marvelous time playing with reflections and learning about congruent figures. Learning is definitely fun when we get to experiment and explore different concepts. Hope you enjoyed a peek inside fourth grade mathematics!
